Teaching
I have taught as both an instructor of record and a teaching assistant in courses spanning American politics, data analysis, and critical data theory. My teaching experience includes both undergraduate and graduate instruction in small seminars of about 18 students and larger classes of about 60 students.
Instructor of Record
(Undergraduate) Data in Theory and Practice (Spring 2024, Spring 2025)
How is data produced, and what problems can arise in the production and interpretation of big data? This course has three main objectives: (1) understanding deliberate and non-deliberate biases in the creation and analysis of data, (2) developing data literacy, and (3) examining the social consequences of biased data and possible solutions. The course begins by introducing questions of validity, reliability, and bias in data and statistics. Students examine cases of bias in influential research and consider why such errors matter for both scholarly inquiry and social justice. The second part of the course focuses on data literacy, including how to interpret graphs, infographics, and tables. Students consider questions such as which statistics deserve attention, why particular statistics are presented, and whether they accurately represent the broader picture. The final part of the course examines how biased data can hinder social justice by benefiting some communities while marginalizing others.
